Since July 2019, citizens of over 150 countries globally no longer need to go to an embassy or consulate to obtain a touristic visa for Laos. The Laos Approval Letter recently introduce allows travelers to apply for a visa from anywhere in the world, at any time, as long as they have an internet connection.
This new process is a step forward to an easier and smoother immigration process for visitors planning on staying in Laos for tourism for a maximum of 30 days. Travelers looking to stay in Laos longer than one month will still need to apply for a traditional tourist visa at an embassy or consulate.
Alternatively, citizens of eligible countries can also obtain a visa on arrival by either printing an application form ahead of their travel and presenting in upon entry in the country or by completing the whole application at the “Visa on arrival” counter in the applicable entry ports. This process, however, is not recommended since travelers may need to wait in long lines and need to ensure they have all the required documents with them.
Citizens who are not eligible for an eVisa or for a visa on arrival are still requested to go in-person to a Laos embassy or consulate and apply for a regular tourist visa.
